AQA A-level Geography Syllabus

AQA A-Level Geography syllabuses share a fundamental core focus: balancing physical and human geography, exploring human-environmental relationships, and mastering data analysis. Both boards are equally valued and accepted by top global universities, and they share several foundational pillars:

  • Balanced Curriculum: AQA maintains an even 50/50 split between Physical Geography and Human Geography.

  • Overlapping Core Topics: They all cover essential physical concepts (like hydrological cycle) alongside vital human concepts (like international development).

  • Geographical Skills: The AQA syllabus requires strong qualitative and quantitative data skills, including statistical analysis and advanced mapping.

AQA Geography Examinations

  • Exams consists of 2 papers, both sat at the end of Year 13.

  • Synoptic Assessment: Integrated directly into Exam Papers 1 and 2.

AQA A-level Geography command word pro de-coding tip

Pro Tip: Decoding A-Level Geography Command Words

Command word: 'Justify' (Higher-Order Command Word)

  • The Pro-Strategy: Build a convincing argument that proves thorough validation of a specific geographic view/hypothesis or course of action. In doing this successfully, you need to show that the positive outcomes of your chosen hypothesis/path decisively outweighs any negatives.

  • The Execution: You must actively discuss the pros and cons of all available options or perspectives. Then you need to explicitly discount alternative choices by explaining exactly why they are less suitable than your chosen outcome.

  • The Golden Rule: Do not simply declare a final conclusion/recommendation without explicitly spelling out the critical thinking that led to it. The primary requirement with this command words is to fully explain the entire review process, demonstrating a thorough evaluation of the evidence.

Geography AQA A-level teaching resources

Sample of my A-level teaching material

In Geography there are very few clear cut answers. Case studies are an essential part of A-level Geography teaching. They allow students a window into the world of others that helps them not only to understand concepts and details, but also empathise and so to higher order thinking to appreciate nuance.

I create my own learning material, which allows new content and perspectives to complement the textbook material.

AQA A-level Geography is content heavy, but with my learning tips I show students how to use the information efficiently without having to memorise hundreds of facts and instead use a few facts smartly. If students understand the concepts involved using one or two specific facts could be all that is needed to help explain the points required.

1. Course alignment and introduction. Students need to know the relevancy of what they are studying

2. Lesson objectives outlining the aims for the learning and what they are studying it

3. Links to a case study clip we first watch together and discuss, then they read the questions before watching again

4. Students then answer these questions as they watch the clip a second time
