My Approach to IB Geography Tutoring
Key elements of my methodology
The IB Diploma Geography Programme is based on a syllabus that emphasises the dynamic interrelationships between people, places, and environments across different spatial scales. The core focus areas centre around sustainability, global change, and interconnectedness.
The Programme is divided into HL and SL, with students choosing to study the HL completing an extra two units, with higher value exam questions. I tailor my teaching resources explicitly to meet both SL and high-value HL exam criteria.

Mastering the Various Pathways Up to and Through the IB Diploma
Many Geography IB Diploma students are taught in K-12 IB schools and so have a pathway to DP through IB PYP and MYP, which means they are already well-practised in the interconnected synoptic way of thinking required to achieve the highest grades in the DP. However, there are also a large number of students whose pathway to the DP has been through the British system and the IGCSE qualification immediately prior to the DP i.e. the hybrid system.
As a teacher who has experience in both systems I understand the strengths and weaknesses of both systems. The strength of the MYP path means students are already trained to think synoptically to see the bigger picture in order to make connections between different geographical topics. Application of such skills is a major requirement to achieve top grades. On the downside the MYP system of teaching integrated humanities has no necessity to teach geography and so DP Geography students may enter the programme with very little content knowledge.
The strength of the hybrid system lies in DP Geography students will almost certainly have received years of geographical skills and content teaching and so enter the DP with high levels of subject knowledge in the comparison. The downside to the hybrid system is that these students will have been taught to compartmentalise different geographical topics. This means they will have to learn very quickly to think synoptically and make the necessary connections in order to correctly process the learning.
Because I have experience of teaching both systems I have a deep understanding of how students may initially struggle when they step-up to DP, and how to help them successfully make the transition

Sample of my IB DP teaching material
This taught lesson extends over two sessions and has a total of 20 pages. This is a representative sample of those pages.
I teach from my own personally created learning material, which allows new content and perspectives to compliment the textbook material. I tie the learning to the textbook pages in the summary slide at the end of each lesson.
IB Diploma Geography teaching is less about lecturing and more about facilitating the student's learning and I do this by providing carefully selected research and case study materials, and setting tasks that the students have to complete by first learning about the content and then applying it to the set questions.
The structure IB Diploma Geography programme is based around four core concepts: the 4Ps - Place, Processes, Power, and Possibilities. Students are expected to apply these in their synoptic thinking and written answers. There are other concepts that must be understood, but the 4Ps are the most important
1. Course alignment and introduction. Students need to know relevancy of what they are learning
3. Theory task example. Studying theory and applying it to case studies builds understanding
5. Tying concepts to the learning. Understanding concepts vital to top grades in DP Geography
2. Lesson learning objectives. Students need to know why they studying this content
4. Task examples tied to case studies. Using clips encourages student engagement
6. Summary and links to the textbook and further reading
