On February 14, 1990 the Voyager 1 spacecraft was instructed to turn it camera one last time towards Earth and took a photograph. from about 6 billion kilometres (4 billion miles) away of our now remote and distant planet.

"Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

How to write winning A-level and IB DP Geography essays

Writing successful Geography essays is a skill that is essential in gaining top grades in A-level and IB Diploma.

This page uses a model essay example  to break-down each element required to achieve high-scoring essays.

Why Studying Geography is so Important

Geography is a diverse and exciting exploration of our rapidly changing, interconnected world.

The complex topics covered include how global population trends, economic development, and environmental sustainability form a nexus of economic and social interaction. Creating a world where a single event can trigger a global butterfly effect, bringing change to many millions of lives.

Geography is a subject with very few binary answers. Thinking like a geographer means moving past simple facts to appreciate interconnectedness, nuance and critical thinking. By relating real-world case studies and global systems and concepts, students gain knowledge of the world through others' eyes into worlds they haven’t personally yet experienced. Such studies transform abstract concepts into informed empathy and academic authority, raise personal confidence, build a lifelong global perspective and boost academic attainment.

The Geography blog host

Gary Barker Geography Tutor

I have been a Geography teacher for over 20 years. I completed my Geography PGCE at Newcastle University and qualifying as a QTS Geography specialist in 2003.

It has been my privilege to have taught some of the nicest people I have ever met in some of the best schools in the world. Before becoming an international teacher I taught in the UK and the Isle of Man. While teaching in the latter I began an illustration business and through that I worked for the BBC and most of the UK national newspapers, creating editorial content.

My first international teaching position was in Kuwait and from there I eventually taught in Portugal, South Korea and Thailand. As a geography teacher I have always appreciated that the world is a highly complex place, but that there is far more that connects us all than divides us. One of the many things my experience as an international teacher taught me was just how many truly great characters there are everywhere.

Through this blog and resource page I will share with you some of my experiences and insights into how the modern world works as well essential study tips such as how to write great geography essays and how to master geography command words.

This enables Gary to engage students across a number of subjects and highlight how those have influenced and manifested in the Geographic realities, models and global issues we see today.”
