About Geography IGCSE, and my specialist tutor approach

Understanding the Cambridge (CIE) Exam Board

Cambridge (CIE) IGCSE is followed by international students who wish to follow a British-style curriculum, but in international schools around the world. The core focus balances physical and human geography, understanding environmental-human relationships, and building fieldwork and data analysis skills.

Cambridge IGCSE Geography Core Syllabuses

  • Focus on both physical systems, such as plate tectonics and human systems, such as economic development.

  • Skill Acquisition: Fieldwork investigation, statistical analysis, and map/cartographic skills.

  • Case studies test real-world examples in structured and extended writing questions.

My Specialist Approach to Geography Tutoring

  • Create a positive learning environment: I build trust by ensuring understanding and with positive student feedback

  • Concepts: I build understanding and application of concepts, by applying them to real world case study examples

  • Learning resources: I have created my own learning resources tailored to the course content and adapted to meet the needs of individual students

  • Simplify complex issues: I break them down into easy to understand chunks to make them easier to understand    and use real world examples to make them less abstract

  • Essay writing skills: essay questions make up the bulk of the marks and so I work on essay structure and content

  • Critical thinking skills: these are essential skills, because without them students cannot achieve the highest grades

  •  As a UK qualified teacher I am subject to oversight by the UK Government's Teacher Regulation Agency

Top tips for writing the fieldwork project evaluation

Be Brutally Honest in Your Evaluation

Examiners look closely at your critical thinking skills. A perfect project does not mean everything went right; it means you understand what went wrong.

  • Be concise and clinical in briefly describing what went well and what you would do differently next time.

  • Identify anomalies: If a data point doesn't fit the trend, don't ignore it. Highlight it and offer a geographical explanation e.g. a sudden traffic spike due being close to a retail park.

  • Acknowledge human error & limitations: Did the weather affect pedestrian counts? Was your sample size too small due to time constraints? State these variables clearly and outline how a future pilot study or altered methodology would fix
